You are right, but the improvement in efficiency is about .01 dB better. That hardly makes it worth it to gain the .1 of 1 dB. If you shorten the trunk, the amount of loading needed increases which then gives you the same bandwidth limitations the other design has. Also the lengths are very critical as the "N" element cannot let its presence be known to another F12 tribander.
