The 2M antenna isn't the problem. It just happened to be the highest point on the tower. If you had a lightning rod above the 2M, it would've been just fine. Apparently you didn't have the tower or antenna feedline adequately grounded. Next time it'll find another point to discharge to - either the mast or another antenna - so you've still got a basic problem.
