Subject: Tuning an antenna

It can be very misleading to attempt the "tuning" of any HF yagi antenna by
taking it to a vertical position with the reflector near or on the ground.
We strongly discourage this manner of tuning as the presence of ground (a
giant capacitor) may at best detune those elements in exact proximity to the
ground. At worse, the reflector may be entirely removed from the antenna
circuit.

A much better method would be to take the antenna up the tower to about 20'.
At this height, you will be able to see what is happening as the affect of
ground is the same for all elements. You may be able to see meaningful
results at a lower height too depending on the composition of the soil
underneath the array.

We do talk about the fallacy of tuning a HF array by turning it vertical in
our document called Debugging An Antenna, available on our web site.
