Subject: Parasitic verticals

Alan,

Adding an F12 vertical as a parasitic element should work great.

K1VR has been working with W1FV on the construction of a vertical parasitic
array for 160m. In their case, it is made out of wire, and it's switchable for
multiple directions. But, the basic idea uses one of the same concepts as the
new F12 verticals. They use a half-wave reflector, instead of a quarter-wave
against ground. The setup you are considering for 80m would be quite similar.
See http://www.yccc.org/Features/Spitfire/spitfire.htm

The other thing you should think about is being able to switch the array in at
least two directions by changing the parasitic element from a reflector to a
director. You would probably switch a base load in and out of the parasitic
element when you switch directions.

Also, beware that 80M antennas present the toughest bandwidth challenges on hf.
Moving from the phone dx window to the bottom of the cw band is never easy.
Your design will have to take this into account.

73,

Jim K1IR
