centre of a dipole and get good results. On the other hand one could also end up with "antenna effects" where the feedline itself becomes a radiator (see any antenna manual). At best a balun should eliminate this problem in the majority of situations. A balun can make things worse, especially if it is a bit reactive. A while back I innocently installed a ?W2AU balun on a Force 12 3C-S and had problems with SWR on 10m. Simple coax coil balun solved the problem. Presumably F12 antennas have been checked out with F12 baluns by the manufacturer... 73 end Barry Kirkwood PhD ZL1DD Signal Hill 66 Cory Road Palm Beach Waiheke Island 1240 NEW ZEALAND www.waiheke.co.nz/signal.htm ----- Original Message ----- From: <wa4dou@juno.com> To: <Force12talk@qth.com> Sent: Tuesday, 16 January, 2001 7:37 AM Subject: Re: [Force 12 Talk] C-31XR Balun ... > Hello Frank and the gang, > While considerable debate still attaches itself to the whole subject of > baluns, i'd like to remind folks, especially those who run considerable > power and have one or more failures associated with their use, that it > has hardly been demonstrated that baluns are necessary in many instances, > despite the fact that the "benefit" of the use thereof is conducive to > near perfect theoretical performance in the mind of the user. > I have a F12 C3SS on a 53 ft. tower and have used it for nearly a year > without any balun whatsoever.
