reply) for your prompt and informative responses. The 40 meter reflector is indeed set as recommended, for the CW portion of the band. I now realize setting the driven element to 7.140 was a poor choice. Although I cannot think of a reason, this setting along with antenna height of 150 feet may be why I get better reports on 10 meter phone operation (28.440 MHz) using the 40 meter feed than with the 20-15-10 meter feed. Tomorrow all EHS steel guys are being replaced with Phillystran. The 40 meter driven element will also be readjusted to 7.220 MHz and relay box installed. I will report the results. In the near future three additional antennas will be added to the tower. Hopefully this will greatly enhance my favorite mode of operation, contesting. There will be a C-3 at 117 feet, another C-4XL at 84 feet and another C-3 at 51 feet. The upper and lower C-4XL/C-3 pair 20-15-10 feeds will be phased together, so that upper/lower/both can be selected. Similarly, the upper and lower C-4XL 40 meter feeds will be phased and switched. Phasing/switching will utilize the WX0B StackMatch. Rotation of lower antennas will be performed by TIC 1022D Ringrotors installed by Array Solutions. If all goes as planned the project will be completed by late October. I'm about at the point of taking mine down. 10, 15, and 20 are working like a champ, but 40 sucks big time. I don't know if there's an issue with feedline or what, but I tuned it around 7.130 and I've noticed that on several occasions, a dipole has more "gain" in s units on the radio then does the beam. That's not even counting the horrible stray rf im getting in the shack. So at this point the entire array is coming down to get things straightened out once and for all.. hopefully for better performance on the lower "rtty" portion of the band. I am new to this list. I reside in Tomball, TX, a small town 25 miles to the northwest of Houston. I have a C-4XL at 150 feet. I tuned the 40 meter section to 7,140 KHz to have operation both on CW and SSB. Now I have purchased a relay box to switch between the bands. The driven element is close to the mast so I can adjust it up to the recommended 7,220 KHz. However, the antenna must be taken down to adjust the reflector. If I only adjust the driven element will I still get decent performance using the relay box? I am thinking the reflector should remain at 7,140 to accommodate both ends of the band. Thanks for any advice you can give me. Keith Dutson WD5DXL -------------------------------------------- Force12Talk mailing list provided as a service by Force 12 Antennas, Inc.
