I have the C-4XL installed with a relay box. My box came with a toggle switch. The up position energizes the relay to the SSB band segment. Applying 12 volts to the box energizes the relay thereby shorting the coils in the box. Since the relay box adds length to both sides of the driven element, even with the relay engaged, you will need to adjust the shorting bars out to compensate. You will need to adjust both bars in at least 3 more inches to compensate for the extra length. But don't trust just a tape measurement. Use a good antenna analyzer to check resonance. I adjusted to 7.030 with the relay not engaged. Ignore impedance when tuning close to the ground, just look at minimum VSWR (resonance), even if it is around 3 to 1. Since the relay box adds length, trim the balun leads as short as possible (2.5). In the up position, is that for 40m SSB? In the manual it says that the antenna must be tuned slightly higher in frequency (jumpers moved outward). How much further out should they be moved? And on the balun leads, it says to trim to 2.5" to 3" long. Which length is better? Any other tips would be appreciated. I haven't installed the beam yet either. It's still on the ground, but I hope to get it in the air over the next few days. TIA es 73!
