Subject: Tuning C-4XL

I faced exactly the same problem last week-end. Having a 24m (70ft) 3x4-way
guyed tower, it is not a trivial task just raising the antenna, let alone
suspending it somehow at 15 ft. and tuning. To make a long story short, I
just went for the recommended distances, raised the antenna directly at the
top of the tower and hoped for the best. No measurements yet, as raising
took until nightfall. Will come back with some measurements as soon as I
have the chance to install the feedlines.

One last comment: my previous experience with beams is limited to the
Cushcraft A3. Although not a bad antenna, the level of mechanical punishment
endured by the C4XL during raise operation would have certainly torn it
apart. Yet the C4XL went to the top in one piece and absolutely straight. A
sight to behold. At least the beast is mechanically solid; have yet to see
how good it plays electrically.

I have a new, assembled C-4XL and need to tune the 40 meter shorting bars
before installing on the tower. The manual suggests raising the antenna to
about 15 feet to test the resonance and VSWR. Since the turning radius is
about 24 feet, this is going to be quite an exercise.

How would you tackle this task? Thanks in advance.
